Ultracold and High Brightness Electron Source for next Generation Particle Accelerators

چکیده
The ultracold plasma-based electron source has recently been proposed as an alternative to conventional photoinjectors or thermionic electron guns, which are widely used in today’s particle accelerators. The advantages of the ultracold plasma-based electron source lie in the fact that the electrons extracted from the cold plasma (from near threshold ionization of ultracold atoms) has very low temperature, e.g. down to 10 K, and has the potential for producing very low emittance and therefore high brightness electron bunches. These features are crucial for the next generation particle accelerators, e.g., free electron lasers, plasma-based accelerators and the future linear colliders. In this paper, we discuss the basic mechanism of ultracold electron beam production and introduce our new facility for an ultracold, high brightness electron source based at the University of Manchester’s Photon Science Institute (PSI).

Photocathodes and DC Guns for Next Generation Light Sources
A new class of synchrotron light sources, based on the use of superconducting electron linear accelerators and beam recirculation with energy recovery, is currently under active consideration. The injectors for such accelerators must deliver high brightness electron beams with appropriate RF time structure and the full average beam current. Various photoemission cathodes have been demonstrated ...
متن کاملDramatic Reduction of Dc Field Emission from Large Area Electrodes by Plasma-source Ion Implantation*
Field emission is one of the principal phenomena limiting the operating voltage of practical electron guns. There is interest in developing photoemission cathode based DC electron guns employing cathode field strengths and cathode-anode voltages well above the present stateof-the-art. Such electron sources could provide high brightness, high average current beams for energy recovered supercondu...
متن کاملInvestigation on the Ion Motion towards Clearing Electrodes in an Accelerator
High brightness beams provided by linac-based accelerators require several measures to preserve their high quality and to avoid instabilities, where the mitigation of the impact of residual ions is one of these measures, in particular if high repetition rates are aimed for. Over the last decade three ion-clearing strategies: clearing electrodes, bunch gaps and beam shaking have been applied to ...

Rapid advances in the performance of superconducting cavities have made RF superconductivity a key technology for accelerators that fulfil a variety of physics needs: high energy particle physics, nuclear physics, neutron spallation sources, and free electron lasers. New applications are forthcoming for frontier high energy physics accelerators, radioactive beams for nuclear astrophysics, next ...
متن کاملSpatial resolution limits for synchrotron-based spectromicroscopy in the mid- and near-infrared.
Spatial resolution tests were performed on beamline 1.4.4 at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley, CA, USA, a third-generation synchrotron light source. This beamline couples the high-brightness synchrotron source to a Thermo-Electron Continumicrom XL infrared microscope. Two types of resolution tests were performed in both the mid-IR and near-IR. The results are compared with a diffraction-li...
